How to Translate Chinese to English From a Picture (Offline, on Any Phone)

Translating a Chinese picture you already have

Chinese menus are dense. Translate one section at a time rather than the whole page; the overlay stays large enough to read and the recognizer has fewer characters to confuse.

Simplified and Traditional in the same app

Mainland China and Singapore use Simplified characters (国, 门, 车). Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau use Traditional (國, 門, 車). AI Translate’s recognizer reads both from the camera without any setting, and when you translate into Chinese you can choose which one to produce.

This matters more than it sounds. Many photo translators trained mainly on Simplified will misread Traditional characters as similar-looking Simplified ones, which produces confident nonsense.

When the translation looks wrong

Chinese misreads usually come from one of three things:

• Similar characters. 己 / 已 / 巳, 未 / 末, 土 / 士. Get closer so the recognizer sees the stroke difference.
• Stylized fonts. Calligraphic shop signs are hard for every app. Look for the same name printed on a menu or receipt.
• Vertical text. Hold the phone so the column runs straight up and down, and freeze the frame.

If a dish name still reads oddly, translate the description or the ingredients line instead. Those are literal and almost always come out clean.
