Offline translation, explained.
Is AI Translate really fully offline?
Yes, for everything except voice input. After a language pack is downloaded, camera and photo translation, typed text translation, pronunciation and the object scanner all run on the phone, and you can switch on airplane mode and keep translating. Voice input uses your phone's own speech recognition, so it works offline only for languages your phone can dictate offline.
How big is a language pack?
About 30 MB per language. Downloading a pack takes a few seconds on Wi-Fi, and you can delete it any time from Offline languages.
Which languages can I download?
All 59, including Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Hindi, Thai, Vietnamese, Arabic and Russian. The camera reads 37 of them. The free plan includes your chosen language pair, and Premium unlocks the rest.
Does the camera work offline too?
Yes. Text recognition is built into the app and the translation model is in the downloaded pack, so the camera needs no server. In the current version it reads Latin-script languages such as Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Vietnamese (37 of the 59). The other 22 languages work offline through typed text and the object scanner.
Will it use my mobile data?
Only in two cases: a language pack download you allow over cellular, and voice input when your phone's speech recognition works online. The Wi-Fi-only download setting is on by default and keeps packs off your data plan. Camera, photo, typed text and object translation never use data.
Why does offline matter if I have roaming?
Roaming is slow and expensive in many countries, underground and rural areas have no signal, and some countries block the translation services you rely on. An offline translator removes all three problems. It is also quicker, because nothing goes to a server and back for each translation.
