The problem

The moment you need a translator is the moment you have no internet.

Translation apps assume a fast connection, a keyboard you can type the language on, and that you are fine uploading whatever you photograph. Travel breaks all three.

Roaming is off. The Wi-Fi needs a login.

Online translators stop working exactly where you need them: on the train, in the basement restaurant, at the border.

You cannot type what you cannot read.

A text box does not help when you cannot spell the word. Point the camera at Latin-script signs and menus. For other scripts, scan the object or ask by voice.

Your photos should stay yours.

Many camera translators send what you photograph to a server. Menus are fine. Passports, prescriptions and contracts are not.

AI Translate translates on your phone, not on a server.

Text recognition and object detection are built into the app, and each translation model is downloaded once. All of it runs on the device, so it works on the plane and your photos never leave your hand.

Everything the app does

One app for signs, menus, objects and messages.

Camera text translation

Read signs and menus, in place.

Point the camera at printed text and the translation appears over the original, block by block. Tap Freeze to hold the frame and read at your own pace. The camera reads Latin-script languages such as Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Vietnamese (37 of the 59).

  • Translation laid over the text, block by block
  • Freeze to hold the frame on a dense menu
  • Import a photo or screenshot, then copy the text
  • Works offline, photos never uploaded

Object scanner

Point. Know. Say it.

Not everything has a label. Open the Scan tab and point it at a bicycle, a backpack or a coffee mug to see its name in both languages. Tap the speaker to hear it. It recognizes over a thousand everyday things.

  • The name in both languages
  • Tap the speaker to hear either one
  • Save words to review later
  • Works offline once the pack is downloaded

Text and voice

Type it, paste it, or just say it.

For messages and quick questions, use the Translate tab. Type or paste and the language is detected automatically, or tap the microphone to speak. Hear the translation aloud, copy or share it, and find it later in your history.

  • Automatic language detection
  • Voice input through your phone's speech recognition
  • Spoken output, copy and share
  • Swap languages in one tap to reply

59 offline languages

Download once. Translate anywhere.

Each language pack is about 30 MB. Download the ones you need on hotel Wi-Fi, and camera, Scan and text translation keep working on the plane, in the metro and in the countryside. A Wi-Fi-only setting keeps downloads off your data plan.

  • About 30 MB per language
  • Wi-Fi-only download setting
  • Free plan includes your language pair

Pronunciation and saved words

Hear it. Save it. Own it.

On the Scan tab, every word comes with audio from your phone's voices. Some languages also get a reading hint, so 커피잔 shows keopijan and Sombrero shows sohm-BREH-roh. Save the words you want to keep and review them any time.

  • Phonetic spelling for English and Spanish
  • Romanization for Korean, Chinese, Russian and Greek
  • Romaji for Japanese words written in kana
  • One-tap save, review any time

FAQ

Questions people ask before they download.

Straight answers about offline use, accuracy, privacy and pricing.

What is a photo translator?

A photo translator is an app that reads the text in a photo or live camera view and shows a translation. AI Translate does this on the phone itself, so it works without internet and never uploads your photos.

Does AI Translate work without internet?

Yes. Once you download a language pack, camera translation, photo translation, typed text translation, spoken pronunciation and the object scanner all run offline, so airplane mode is fine. Voice input uses your phone's own speech recognition, so it works offline only for languages your phone can dictate offline.

Which languages can the camera read?

In the current version, the camera and photo import read Latin-script languages such as Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Vietnamese (37 of the 59). The other 22 languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Arabic, Russian and Thai, work through typed or pasted text and the object scanner, plus voice input where your phone can dictate the language.

Can I translate an image or screenshot?

Yes. On the Text tab, tap Import photo and pick an image or screenshot from your library. The app reads the text, translates it and shows the result in a sheet you can copy. Like the live camera, it reads Latin-script text (37 of the 59 languages).

How accurate is the translation?

On-device translation handles printed signs, menus, labels and short instructions well. Very stylized fonts, handwriting and idioms are harder. Freezing the frame and holding the phone steady usually helps.

Does the app upload my photos or camera frames?

No. Text recognition, object detection and translation happen on the device, and there is no account. Your photos, camera frames and typed text stay on your phone. Voice input is the exception, because it uses your phone's speech recognition, which Apple or Google may process online.

What does the object scanner do?

It recognizes over a thousand everyday objects, such as food, transport, clothing and household items, and shows the name in both languages with audio. English and Spanish get phonetic spelling. Korean, Chinese, Greek and Cyrillic languages such as Russian get a romanized reading, and so do Japanese words written in kana.

Is AI Translate free?

Yes. The free plan includes your chosen language pair and 15 translations a day across every feature. Premium removes the limit and unlocks all 59 languages, starting at $1.99 a month, with yearly and lifetime options in the app.

Which devices does it support?

AI Translate runs on iPhone and iPad from the App Store and on Android phones and tablets from Google Play. Language packs download on either platform.

How is this different from Google Translate or Apple Translate?

AI Translate is built offline-first. Camera, photo, text and object translation run on the phone, there is no account, and camera frames are never uploaded. It also adds an object scanner with audio, built for learning the words around you.
